Description

Punica granatum is a deciduous shrub or small tree, usually 3–8 m tall, with a bushy crown. Young branches are often reddish and may develop short spines. Leaves are simple, opposite or clustered, narrow lanceolate to oblong, usually 2–7 cm long, with entire margins, glossy surfaces, and short petioles. Flowers are bisexual, large, solitary or clustered, and usually bright red or orange-red. The calyx is thick, leathery, and persistent, while petals are delicate and crumpled. Numerous stamens surround the superior ovary. Fruits are distinctive globose berries (balustas), with a tough leathery rind. Inside are many seeds surrounded by juicy, edible red or white arils separated by membranous partitions.
