Description

Medicago sativa is a perennial herbaceous legume, usually 30–100 cm tall, with a deep, extensive root system that may penetrate several meters into the soil. Stems are numerous, erect to ascending, branched, and herbaceous. Leaves are trifoliolate, alternate, and arranged along the stem. Each leaflet is oblong to elliptic, 1–3 cm long, with serrated margins mainly near the apex and a characteristic small mucro at the tip. Flowers are bisexual, papilionaceous, and arranged in dense axillary racemes. Flowers are usually violet to purple, occasionally blue or yellowish. Fruits are spirally coiled legumes, usually containing several small kidney-shaped seeds.
