Description
Alysicarpus monilifer is a small perennial or annual herb, usually 20–60 cm tall, with an erect to ascending branched growth habit. The stems are slender, cylindrical, green to reddish, and often covered with fine hairs. Leaves are simple, alternate, and variable in shape, usually elliptic, ovate, or oblong, measuring 1–5 cm long, with entire margins, rounded to acute apices, and a smooth to slightly hairy surface. Unlike many papilionoid legumes, the leaves are unifoliolate with small stipules at the base. Flowers are bisexual, papilionaceous, pink to purple, and arranged in slender terminal racemes. The corolla consists of a standard petal, two wings, and a keel, characteristic of Fabaceae. Fruits are small, cylindrical, jointed pods consisting of several bead-like segments, which separate into individual one-seeded units at maturity.
