Annonaceae

Annonaceae Juss. comprises approximately 105–110 genera and more than 2,400 species, making it the largest family within the order Magnoliales. Molecular phylogenetic studies have substantially improved the understanding of generic relationships and tribal classification, although the family remains morphologically well defined. Annonaceae represents one of the earliest-diverging lineages of flowering plants and is considered taxonomically and evolutionarily important in angiosperm systematics.

Distribution

Annonaceae is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, with major centres of diversity in tropical South America, Central America, tropical Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and northern Australia. Members are characteristic components of lowland tropical rainforests but also occur in monsoon forests, riverine woodlands, and seasonally dry forests. Several economically important fruit species are cultivated throughout tropical regions beyond their native distributions. Annonaceae has limited natural representation in Pakistan because of the country's predominantly subtropical and temperate climate. The family is represented mainly by cultivated species, present in orchards, botanical gardens, and home gardens for their edible fruits.
