Description

Ricinus communis is a fast-growing annual or perennial shrub, usually 1–5 m tall, but under favourable tropical conditions it may develop into a small tree up to 10 m tall. The plant has an erect, hollow, branched stem that is green, reddish-purple, or glaucous depending on variety. The stem and leaves contain white milky latex when damaged. Leaves are large, simple, alternate, palmately lobed, usually 20–60 cm wide, with 5–11 deep lobes, serrated margins, a long petiole, and a glossy or waxy surface. The foliage may vary from green to reddish-purple. Flowers are small, unisexual, and arranged in terminal or axillary racemes. The species is monoecious, with male flowers located mainly in the lower portion of the inflorescence and female flowers above. Male flowers contain numerous stamens, while female flowers possess conspicuous reddish stigmas. Fruits are dry, globose, spiny three-lobed capsules containing three large mottled seeds. The seeds possess a characteristic caruncle and contain toxic ricin.
