Citharexylum spinosum is a small evergreen to semi-evergreen tree, usually 5–15 m tall, with a rounded crown. Young branches may develop short spines, giving the species its specific name spinosum. Leaves are: Simple. Opposite or sometimes alternate. Elliptic to obovate. Glossy green. Entire-margined. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. Flowers are: Small. White. Fragrant. Bisexual. They occur in long terminal spikes or racemes. Corolla is tubular with five lobes, and stamens are four. Fruit is a small drupe, initially green and becoming orange-red to black when mature.
