Araucaria cunninghamii is a tall, evergreen coniferous tree, usually 20–60 m tall, occasionally reaching over 70 m in its native forests. It possesses a straight cylindrical trunk with grey to dark brown, rough, fissured bark that peels in thin scales. The crown is narrowly conical in young trees, becoming more open and irregular with age. Branches are arranged in regular horizontal whorls, forming a symmetrical pyramidal habit. Leaves are simple, spirally arranged, stiff, leathery, and glossy green. Juvenile leaves are awl-shaped and sharply pointed, whereas adult leaves are smaller, triangular to lanceolate, and closely appressed to the branchlets. The species is monoecious, producing separate male and female cones on the same tree. Male cones are long, cylindrical, and pendent, while female cones are globose to ovoid, woody, and borne near the ends of upper branches. At maturity, the female cones disintegrate to release numerous winged seeds.
