Aizoaceae Martinov comprises approximately 180 genera and over 1,800 species, with the greatest diversity occurring in southern Africa. Modern molecular studies have refined the circumscription of several genera and subfamilies, while the family remains well supported as a distinct lineage within Caryophyllales. Members of Aizoaceae are renowned for their remarkable adaptations to arid and semi-arid environments.

Distribution

Aizoaceae is distributed mainly in southern Africa, which represents the global centre of diversity for the family, particularly within the Succulent Karoo and Namaqualand regions. Additional representatives occur throughout tropical and subtropical Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, the Arabian Peninsula, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Many species inhabit deserts, rocky slopes, coastal dunes, saline soils, and other xeric environments, while several have become naturalized worldwide through horticultural cultivation. In Pakistan, Aizoaceae is represented by relatively few genera and species compared with its diversity in southern Africa. Species occur mainly in sandy plains, saline soils, coastal habitats, rocky wastelands, and disturbed sites. Some ornamental and naturalized species are cultivated in gardens and urban landscapes because of their drought tolerance and attractive flowers.
